THE GOOD BEER GUIDE 2023: Where to go for a pint in Barnsley!

It’s here, and it’s beautiful! The Good Beer Guide 2023 has dropped this week full of the best places to go across the UK for a pint - and Barnsley is very well represented!

The guide is a comprehensive run-down of pubs, bars and clubs all selected by CAMRA (The Campaign for Real Ale) members as places to “savour good beers from small breweries as well as cask-conditioned lagers and world beers”.

In this 50th anniversary of the book, around 4500 locations have made the converted list, with 401 of those coming from Yorkshire and 11 based right here in and around our town!

The Barnsley hot-spots to have made the list are as follows:

Heaven & Ale, 66 Agnes Road, S70 1NH

Jolly Tap on the Arcade, 31 The Arcade, S70 2QP

Maison du Biere Barnsley, Lower Castlereagh Street, S70 1AR

Old No 7, 7 Market Hill, S70 2PX

Tipsy Cow, Unit 2B, Gateway Plaza, Sackville Street, S70 2RD

Crown & Anchor, Barugh Lane, S75 1LL

Anvil Arms, 28 Church Street, S75 5HG

Darton Tap, 70 Church Street, S75 5HQ

Maison du Biere, Wath Road, S74 8HJ

Market Hotel, 2-4 Wentworth Road, S74 8EP

Tap & Brew, 9 Hoyland Road, S74 0LT

Heaven and Ale have recently been voted one of the best micro-pubs in the UK.

The Good Beer Guide formula is simple. Through the proceeding year, CAMRA regional branches disperse across the country seeking which locations will make it into the next addition of the book. The volunteers use CAMRA’s very own National Beer Scoring System (ranked from 1-5) which brings into account the drinks condition and taste plus the name and location of the drink sampled.

The foreword for this anniversary edition has been written by HRH The Prince of Wales, which you can order online via the camra.org.uk website.
