FIVE places to grab TAPAS and SMALL PLATES in and around Barnsley!

Updated: Apr 14, 2023

Barnsley is becoming a hotbed of independent restaurants serving up an array of mouthwatering foods and delicacies from around the world. Growing alongside eating options across the town has been the national obsession with Tapas, a small plates experience made famous by southern Spain. So, as we get stuck into the warmer months, here are a few places in Barnsley that are offering it!

The Royal – Barugh Green

The Royal in Barugh Green, originally a 19th Century Coaching Inn, was re-opened in December 2013 after an extensive refurbishment both internally & externally, with roaring real fires in winter & a large beer garden for summer. Since their opening, the Tapas offering has become their speciality with meats sourced locally from Cannon Hall Farm and other ingredients imported from Spain itself. Sorting you out with both hot and cold dishes, they even have a tapas dessert menu! If you’re looking for a place to get the family and mates together for a special occasion, they also accommodate larger bookings with prices starting at £20 per person.

The Salt House – The Glass Works

Located at The Glass Works, The Salt House combines creative cocktail mixology with mouth-watering Tapas dishes. Opening in 2022 as part of the town centres re-development, the Spanish speciality has become their must-try this Spring! Serving between 12pm – 9pm, not only will you have access to the biggest tequila offering in Yorkshire, but you can even select to experience their ‘Blind Tapas’ which includes the chefs favourite dishes and off-menu specials (Thursday to Saturday) Be sure to make sure your phone has been fully charged, as the bar is becoming a true local hotspot for ‘Instagram-able’ content thanks to their food presentation and fresh interior!

Falco Lounge – The Glass Works

The second Glass Works bar on the list has again become an absolute staple for food and drinks over the past two years. Falco Lounge offers a varied menu from brunch to burgers, but it’s their tapas selection that has caught the imagination of customers who want to grab a mid-shop bite to eat or looking to add their visit into their night out agenda around town. Their Taps offerings include many of the Spanish classics, plus original dishes like pulled beef brisket, Korean chicken wings and spicy beef quesadilla. They even have ‘Tapas Tuesday’ that involves three dishes and a glass of wine for just £11.75 from 5pm.

The Pavilion - Gateway Plaza

The Bar and Restaurant, located within Gateway Plaza on Sackville Street, is another independent business offering freshly prepared dishes from (where possible) locally sourced ingredients. If you’re planning your night out in the area, The Pavilion is a great place to grab some small plates before you head into town. Like many of our local restaurants, they’re putting their own twist on the Spanish classic by offering popcorn chicken, BBQ wings and garlic mushrooms alongside their patatas bravas and lightly battered halloumi.

Timberyard Tapas – Wath

We know we know, Wath is just ‘eeking into Rotherham territory, but if you don’t mind jumping in the car and heading (just) across the border, Timberyard Tapas is a place you need to give a go! The micro bar has developed somewhat of a cult following since it’s opening in the village, featuring Tapas options such as battered cod, pork belly and halloumi fries, not to mention a very decent cocktail and spirits menu! There was talk about them relocating, but they’ve since decided to stay right where they are and re-develop their existing premises (this means that they’ll be closed from the 9th of May until the 26th of May)

So, if you’re looking to round up the mates this spring to partake in some Spanish cuisine sprinkled with local and British twists, round up the mates go and give this lot a try!
